Reviews:

This is a wonderful story, expertly laid out, with mystery after mystery being put before William to solve. I was very sorry when this book came to an end for it was one of the best and most unusual spy thrillers I have read for a long time. You will be a deprived person if you do not read this fine book.

Constable is an engaging hero, not without his faults, but certainly a character one can identify with and empathise with, and the relationship with Helen, his intended, is handled sensitively but honestly. I read the book in two sittings, completely swept away by Walker’s erudite and very clever writing. That, combined with a propulsive and explosive plot made for a totally rewarding and nail-biting read.

Paul Walker writes with authority about the intrigue so prevalent in the court of Queen Elizabeth I, but never once lets the well-researched historical machinations overshadow a compelling plot and the richly drawn, colourful, characters.
